Unitemps broadcasts first ever Twitter Live Q&A

Unitemps went live on Twitter on Friday 19th May to answer your questions. After our recent Twitter Poll, you told us you most wanted to ask a recruiter more about CVs and cover letters – and so, that’s exactly what our Recruitment Consultants Francesca and Aleksandra talked about in the live broadcast.

If you missed the live event, you can watch the video via our Twitter feed. We decided to put together a quick summary of the video.

1– What are the worst mistakes to make on your CV?

  • Having over 3 pages
  • Spelling mistakes – make sure you check spelling and grammar to avoid errors slipping in
  • Poor structure • Missing key points – include details on your education, experience and short personal statement

2 – How do you create an effective cover letter?

  • Look at the job advert carefully before you apply – focus on the required skills and experience and try to match your own against this
  • Try to keep it to one page – it shouldn’t be brief but be careful it isn’t too long
  • Where appropriate, show some personality!

3 – Can one cover letter cover all jobs?

No – every job is different and requires skills and experience unique to that role. Be sure to tailor it to the particular job advert.

4 – What should you leave off your CV?

  • Pictures, national insurance number, date of birth or age are not relevant.
  • Family/marital status
  • Potentially references – instead, provide a statement clarifying that references can be given upon request.

5 – How can you make your CV or cover letter more successful?

  • Add specific dates to your experience and employment i.e the date you started to present or the final date working at a particular organisation/studying at a particular institution Address your cover letter correctly – i.e ‘Dear Sir/Madam…’
  • Have a friend check your CV and cover letter – it always helps to have a fresh pair of eyes.

Keep your questions coming to #unitempslive on Twitter and we'll aim to answer during our next live broadcast.
