With high competition for graduate jobs, it’s easy to feel disheartened when looking for work. Job applications are a lengthy process and finding ways to highlight your skills can be difficult, especially when employers ask for years of experience before you’ve even stepped on the ladder. To help out any struggling grads, we’ve put together a guide on how you can show employers you have the experience needed and bag that entry-level position.
1. You have been working for the past 3+ years – even if you haven’t been employed
Many people forget just how many skills you gain at University. As well as subject-specific skills, each degree has its own transferable skill-set that can add value to any role. Your graduation is the result of a lot of hard work and valuable experiences – don’t discredit it.
2. Refer to any previous experience
Whether you’re employed by Unitemps or work in a restaurant, the skills you gain in these jobs are just as important. Focus on the skills-set you have developed and less what the actual job is. For example, dressing a mannequin and arranging clothes in a shop can show you are organised, reliable and have high attention to detail.
3. Volunteering and other experiences
Not only is volunteering a great way to give back to your community, but it can also be an opportunity to expand your professional network. Other experiences such as sports, clubs and tutoring are also a great way to demonstrate your years of experience in a specific field. It shows employers you are happy to help others and use your own initiative.
4. Create a professional portfolio
To land an entry-level job these days, you need to stand out. One easy(ish) way to do this is to have a professional portfolio to show off. Having concrete examples of your work speaks volumes and sets you apart from fellow candidates who don’t back up their claims.
So, just because you’ve been in university for the past few years doesn’t mean you don’t have years of experience in your field. If job listings explicitly say words like beginner, entry-level, new grad etc. then you should apply! You have the experience, you just need to market yourself in a way that best showcases it.
