This job is part of the Middlesex University Students’ Union’s Community Placement Scheme and is only available to current students of Middlesex University. For over 20 years Homeless Action in Barnet has been providing help for people who are homeless in Barnet. Our staff team – supported by around 40 volunteers – supports several hundred clients each year. With donations from a wide range of individuals, schools, churches, charities, religious groups and commercial organisations – HAB Centre brings about positive change in the lives of people who are homeless or at risk of homelessness, and help them plan for and realise a better future.
We do this by providing advice to help people find accommodation and to access sources of help and support. This could be helping people to gain benefits that they are entitled to; or it could be helping people access education or training – or help them to secure employment. Of course it also means providing the basic essentials – healthy meals, warm clothing, showers and access to medical services. In addition we work to support people in tackling their issues with health and addiction, and we offer creative activities through a ‘Well-Being’ programme to boost confidence, self-esteem and practical skills such as basic cooking and budget management.
Centre Support assistants will work alongside our staff team and volunteers. They will be able to gain a wide range of experience in a very busy and sometimes challenging environment. Some of the things you might do are as follows:
• General administration duties and helping with management of reception
• Assisting with food serving and preparation
• Helping to manage and distribute clothing store
• Potential opportunities to shadow and assist a 1-2-1 with a client, discussing their initial assessment, and what ongoing help they will receive from the organisation
• Opportunities to gain insight into different aspects of help provided by the organisation, including housing and benefit support, and medical advice.
• Strong interpersonal skills
• Currently studying at Middlesex University
• Ability to work effectively under pressure and to tight deadlines
• Strong multi-tasking skills
• Cultural-awareness
• Strong organisational skills and the ability to prioritise and plan a workload effectively
• Creative and resourceful
• Proactive and determined
• Complete a DBS check (MDXSU will help to pay and process this)
• Work well in a close knit team
• Must observe confidentiality
• Friendly and outgoing
• Experience in a similar role
