Organisation description

Houselights are a company that are working to ‘Shine a light on industry sexual harassment’ within the theatre industry. With the support of theatres, unions and other arts organisations, Houselights workshops are aimed at students finishing training, to let them know about the different harassment policies in theatres and companies that they will likely work with in their professional careers. We believe that knowing about what you can expect from a process of reporting sexual harassment is a crucial part of preparing for professional life. At Houselights, we champion clear and honest communication about good practice in the industry.
Houselights needs a proactive Fundraising Assistant to ensure that we have the finances to deliver our educational sessions. Whilst some organisations are in the position to be able to fund the workshops, others may struggle to find the funding to afford this. Our belief that everyone should be able to understand harassment policies, and follow up procedures means that we would like to make the workshops accessible, regardless of financial provision. To do so, it is important that we have other streams of income to supplement this.
The main responsibilities for this role will include writing funding bids, using administrative skills, database upkeep and outreach to organisations and individuals to secure more financial support. In addition to this, non-traditional suggestions of how to fundraise and generate income are welcome – creative thinking is encouraged!
Houselights is a small start-up and as such, we are committed to constant learning and improving our practice. In this role, you will have the opportunity to contribute ideas and suggestions that will help us progress in our early stages.
As a Fundraising Assistant with Houselights, you will be expected to;
• Work with the team to understand the context surrounding sexual harassment in the theatre industry as well as basic theories of power and the ways they manifest in the entertainment industry
• Contribute to and write funding bids for a range of grants
• Thank supporters and organisations in a timely and courteous manner, recording interactions on a database
• Work to recognise opportunities for, and establish relationships with new donors and able to clearly communicate the message of the organisation
• Use examples from other organisations to assist with your understanding of fundraising
• Update spreadsheets with financial information
• Keep strict confidentiality about finances as well as other sensitive information the organisation may deal with
Essential

• Ability to work effectively under pressure and to tight deadlines
• A current student of Middlesex University’
• A desire to work with and enhance the local community
• Availability to work the four hours at some point between 10-5 Weds to Fridays
• A sense of cultural-awareness and being open to learning about intersectional feminism
• An awareness of the importance of confidentiality when dealing with sensitive information
• Knowledge of the processes of fundraising and an active desire to further your research in this area
• Strong organisational skills and the ability to prioritise and plan a workload effectively
